Neges Mawon
Neges Mawon
Nègès Mawon is a Haitian feminist organization dedicated to combating the effects of patriarchal societal structures on women.
Who They Are
They aim for liberation from all forms of violence and oppression suffered by young Haitian girls and women and we place our feminist struggle in the ideal of justice and freedom carried by the revolution of 1804. To reach this political horizon, they work every day to improve the conditions of women and girls in Haiti.
They are involved in the promotion, defense and strengthening of women's rights on the social, cultural, economic and political levels. This struggle is part of a perspective of liberation against any system that hinders the full and complete enjoyment of women, everywhere in the world, of their humanity, their rights and their bodies.
Neges Mawon? Why?
Naming their feminist organization "NÈGÈS MAWON" is in line with certain historians such as Edner Brutus and Jean Fouchard, who defined maroonage as a phenomenon of permanent protest, which allowed the Haitian revolution to succeed. Their struggle inherits the ideal of justice and freedom carried by the revolution of 1804.
